3-Stars (Very Good)
Type: Neapolitan style
Pizza Ordered: Margherita
Overall: Openned in 2011 Luna Rossa Winery and Pizzeria has become one of the most popular restuarants in the La Cruces area. There is definitley attention to detail in presenting Italian cuisine that is authentic and delicious. I sought this restaurant out, specifically to try the pizza, and I was not disappointed.
Crust: The Luna Rossa crust is a very good Neapolitan-style crust, prepared in a
pecan-wood fired oven. The crust was thicker one the edges, with a slight crispiness and toughness that faded into a thin moist center; characteristic of a Neapolitan pie. The crust displayed charring on the bottom; however, I would have liked a bit more char. The flavor of the crust was very good providing a subtle platfom for the pizza.
Sauce: Luna Rossa's tomatoes were a delicate addition of crushed San Marzano tomatoes that added just the right character to the pie; no excessive saltiness, acidity or overwhelming flavor. I was impressed with the care taken to distribute the sauce so each bite of the center of the pie had its benefit. They did add sliced tomatoes to the pizza. I'm not a fan of that approach, as it, in my opinion, knocks off balance of the tomato flavor.
Cheese: The cheese was a freshly made mozzarella and was a mild and well-blended addition to the overall flavor. Again, no excessive saltiness was added by the cheese.
Other Ingredients: The fresh basil was flavorful ,added adequatly, and at the right time; not scorched.
Service: Exceptionally friendly and prompt service, with great wine recommendations.
Atmosphere: A relaxed, desert chic space. Not too noisy!
Utensils and Napkins: Sturdy utensils and high quality napkins.
