Rating: 4-Stars (Excellent)
Type: New York Style
Pizza Ordered: Cheese Slice
Overall: On the day we visited Benny Fierro's, I had no particular pizzeria in mind, but spotted this place and knew, somehow, I had a winner!
The charmingly grungy, unpretentious appearance of Benny Fierro's tells you right away, they are serious about their pizza. The slice at Benny's is a spot-on New York style product. The slice is unusually large (takes two paper plates), and brings all the qualities one looks for; foldable, a bit of grease, and most of all, classic flavor. If in Southside Pittsburgh, do not miss this pizzeria!
Crust: Benny Fierro's crust is everything you need on a slice. The crust is thin, but sturdy around back edge, nicely browned, and slightly crispy on the bottom, with a nice overall chewiness.
Sauce: The sauce on the slice is a nice tomato blend with subtle herbs. It's
adequately applied, but doesn't dominate the flavor of the slice, nor is it messy.
Cheese: The cheese on Benny Fierro's slice is a flavorful, seemingly high-moisture mozzarella, a bit oily, with little pleasant saltiness. As with the sauce, the cheese fits well with the overall flavor of the slice.
Service: Very friendly!
Atmosphere: Classic Slice joint with a funky vibe.
Utensils: Nothing fancy, but quite adequate for a slice.
